Relato que había de forjar el arquetipo del vampiro femenino en la literatura universal, “Carmilla”, publicado por primera vez en la revista “The Dark Blue” en 1871, es sin duda la obra más famosa del irlandés Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (1814-1873). Además del diseño que éste imprimió a su figura central, hacen del mismo una pieza maestra el nervio de la acción, el vigor de los personajes y el inquietante clima crepuscular, casi siempre a caballo entre día y noche, entre sueño y vigilia, que impregna la obra. Este precedente y sustrato indudable del “Drácula” de Bram Stoker –obra que aparecería poco menos de treinta años más tarde– figura por derecho propio en la galería más selecta de las letras fantásticas europeas.
